Cantor Immigration Op-Ed in RTD

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Eric Cantor published an op-ed in today’s Richmond Times-Dispatch discussing his views on the immigration debate.

"If your village is situated on the banks of a river and the levee bursts, causing severe damage, would it make sense to rebuild the town before you fix the breach in the levee?

Ask the same of the resuscitated Senate immigration bill. Should the legislation become law in its current form, we would fail to address the open borders and unchecked illegal immigration that have become the Achilles heel of our national security.

Presently, the bill fails to add enough fencing and security features to establish control over the border. As a result, immigration officials will have to continue to ‘catch and release’ the tens of thousands of border-crossers they apprehend because we lack the detention space and resources to hold them."

Cantor Post on NRCC Blog

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Eric published a guest post at the NRCC Blog today, to discuss the recent victories by House Republicans in defending conservative principles.

"As I have traveled and listened to Republicans across the country, one refrain has remained constant – it is time for our party to rededicate itself to conservative reform. When Republicans fight for conservative principles, Republicans win. The wave of Republican victories on the House floor have proven it.

House Republicans stood united against abusive tactics, secret Democrat earmarks and a host of other issues where the Democrats failed to live up to their campaign promises. As a result, the American People have seen past the Democrats’ hollow rhetoric and rejected their agenda. Democrat failures have triggered a 14% approval rating – literally the lowest Congressional approval rating in recorded history.

The Democrats have already mired themselves in a storm of trouble. Speaker Pelosi and her party believe that they know how to run your lives better than you; they believe that the best ideas are found in Washington. They couldn’t be more wrong.

I firmly believe that the American People generate the best ideas; it is the innate creativity of the people that has long made our nation great. And as we navigate a world faced with increasing challenges, our ingenuity will ensure that America’s best days lay ahead.

Thanks for the chance to post today, I look forward to continuing this discussion as we move forward."

Op-Ed at National Review Online

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Eric published an op-ed today at National Review Online titled, "Abbas's Chance - Mideast moment of truth." Here is a quick excerpt:

"With all the support he needs from the international community and, at least for the time being, no longer saddled with Hamas, Abbas must show he can be the bold peace partner Israel never had with its Palestinian neighbors. Until he proves to be such, I will remain skeptical. With a wary eye toward the Gaza pullout, Israel cannot be expected to dig its own grave out of desperation for peace."

WashTimes Article on Border Security

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Eric Cantor weighed in on the immigration debate in today's Washington Times. It's an interesting article that outlines the expectations of the House debate on the immigration bill.

Here is a quote by Rep. Cantor from the article: "Mr. Cantor said the border-security parts of the Senate bill are no more than what Congress already passed before, 'so if you've got a situation where the border is still porous and you provide no interior enforcement and you provide amnesty, you're going to be in the same situation 10 years from now.'"
