The Democrat Budget – A Disaster for the Middle-Class

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Recently passed, Democrat tax hike assumptions raise the tax burden of every American, particularly the middle-class. Their budget, which they voted to pass this week, includes the following tax assumptions:

  • Raises the current "10 percent tax bracket" to 15 percent. This would increase the burden on all American taxpayers, especially the lowest income earners.
  • Implements an across-the-board increase on marginal income tax rates.
  • Reinstates the marriage penalty. Approximately 23 million married couples would be affected.
  • Slashes the $1,000 per-child tax credit in half.
  • Increases the tax on dividends, which often supplement the income of senior citizens relying on Social Security.
  • Reinstates the death tax, which is considered the largest impediment to transferring family-owned businesses from one generation to the next.

The consequences are chilling for ordinary Americans. Democrat strategists believe that by hiding these assumptions in a larger budget, the American people won’t hold them accountable over the resulting tax hikes. Fortunately, the legislative struggle is not yet over and it is not too late to prevent their plan from succeeding.

House Republicans will fight against these tax hikes at every opportunity; we must not allow tax hikes to plunge this economy into recession and chase jobs away. It is time to get Washington working again – working on common-sense solutions to the problems facing people’s everyday lives, rather than adding to those problems by imposing a heavier tax burden. Now, more than ever, we need a fiscal policy that spurs job growth and investment to create good middle-class jobs and brighter economic days.

Democrats Plan, Literally, To Raise Gas Prices

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

Congressman John Dingell, a leading House Democrat, has publicly offered his plan to solve America's energy problems - enact a 50-cent tax on every gallon of gasoline. House Democrats seem to have one solution to every problem, a desire to raise your taxes.

This is a time of economic uncertainty, when many middle-class families are struggling with the monthly house payment. The last thing American families need is yet another tax to pay. Unfortunately, the record of House Democrats is clear - since the Democrats took control of Congress, gasoline prices have risen by over 40 percent. It now seems that House Democrats don't believe that gas prices are high enough; rather than working to lower them, they are plotting new ways to raise them.

House Republicans are dedicated to providing the American people with tax relief, and will continue to stand against Democrat efforts to raise your taxes.

Eric Cantor Op-Ed at NRO

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Eric Cantor published an op-ed at National Review Online, regarding the ongoing crisis in South America and what the United States should do about it.

"But the isolationist fervor on the Democratic campaign trail has further exhausted Congress’s willingness to approve pending free-trade deals with important allies such as Colombia. Our Latin American friends have long complained that we treat them like a forgotten backwater. We sit on our heels, however, at our own peril. Our reluctance to deepen our economic ties with Latin America leaves a vacuum to be exploited by our adversaries. Venezuelan socialist megalomaniac-in-chief Hugo Chavez is making this point abundantly clear."

Breaking News: House Democrats Violated House Rules

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Only the Democrat House Leadership could find an unethical way to pass an “ethics” bill.

House Democrats had crafted legislation, an ethics bill in name only, that will do nothing to clean-up Washington. In fact, many non-partisan experts believe that it will only further empower the special interests.

Tonight, on the House floor, House Democrats were headed towards defeat. They were opposed by a bipartisan coalition of Members, who wanted to work towards meaningful ethics reform, rather than accept the empty rhetoric offered by the House Democrat Leadership. At the end of the vote, the bipartisan coalition had prevailed; yet, Speaker Pelosi held the vote open and strong-armed less senior Representatives into voting her way. This action violated House rules that were enacted in January of last year.

One thing is clear – House Democrats have failed the American People. They can’t even pass an “ethics” bill without violating the rules.

Defending the Second Amendment

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Recently, House Democrats launched new attacks on your second amendment rights. They introduced legislation that would have spent your tax dollars to prohibit lawfully owned guns from law-abiding citizens in public housing communities. I am pleased to report to you that House Republicans fought back and won.
