Below please find an email I sent to my district three years ago in May of 2005. It refutes some charges the national Democrats leveled against me linking me to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. Now over 3 years later, they are trying to making the same charges, over the same issues—and once again it just won’t work. I opposed casino gambling in VA then and, I still do. Simply put, neither my staff nor I ever met officially with or did any actions for Jack Abramoff. These attacks are just weak fabrications. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me—Thanks, Eric Cantor.

Greetings!
Yesterday you may have read a story about me in the Richmond Times Dispatch.
I want to make sure you, as a trusted supporter, have the true facts about a letter I signed opposing the expansion of Indian Casino gambling.
I oppose the expansion of Indian Tribal Casino gambling and signed a letter opposing its expansion. Specifically, in 2003, I joined the Speaker of the House, the Majority Leader of the House, and the Majority Whip in signing a letter to the Secretary of the Interior, Gale Norton, about a tribe in Louisiana that was looking for federal tribal recognition of some land in which the tribe had no historical ties. The tribe’s hope was to get the land recognized as a part of their reservation, and then set up a casino.
I signed the letter after the local Congressman from Louisiana asked that I help him make sure the Department of the Interior didn’t allow the expansion of tribal land, because he felt it would allow for the creation of an unwanted casino in his district.
The local Congressman, the Speaker of the House and I all agreed that it was wrong for the government to allow for the expansion of gambling, I rightfully signed the letter.
In the letter we forcefully argued against the expansion of Indian Casino Gambling through “reservation shopping.” As you are no doubt aware, I have long opposed the expansion of casino gambling. In this case the question was should Indian tribes be allowed to buy land far from their historical homes, declare this new land a reservation, and then open a casino?
Whether it is in Louisiana or Virginia-the answer is and should be no!
I make no apology for opposing this abuse of the system which I believe is against federal law, and I make no apology for signing this letter.
Here is a link to the actual letter I signed for you to review. You can make up your own mind about whether or not you agree with its contents.
Additionally, the Washington liberal Democrat leadership is attempting to link Republican leaders like me to a lobbyist under federal investigation, Jack Abramoff, who represented other Indian tribes.
In truth, neither I nor anyone on my staff ever talked to Mr. Abramoff about this letter. The undisputed fact is that I was asked directly by the Congressman whose state was directly impacted.
As I have said, regardless of whoever else might have wanted action on this issue, no one should support the expansion of Indian casino gambling through “reservation shopping.”
Being in Leadership in the House of Representatives allows me a seat at the table when issues affecting the Seventh District of Virginia are being discussed. It allows me to advocate for the things that are important, be it national legislation that creates jobs and improves our schools, or for the local projects that make our community a great place to live and work. Being in Leadership is good for the seventh District and good for Virginia.
When I assumed my leadership duties in 2003, I was warned that I would be subjected to these kinds of unfair attacks. Unfortunately the current poisonous partisan atmosphere in Washington is focused on gossip and personal destruction. I expect more unfair attacks of this nature in the coming days.
If you have any questions, concerns or thoughts please feel free to contact me at eric@cantorforcongress.com or (804) 358-6160.
Thank you for your continued support, I look forward to seeing you soon.
Sincerely,
Eric Cantor
Member of Congress
