My Discussions with the Citizens of Culpeper

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

Last week I had the pleasure of speaking with the citizens of Culpeper to discuss a variety of topics facing both the county and our country. Hosted by the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce, our meeting was attended by everyone from high school students to local business owners.

We talked about the current economic crisis and how we can work together to overcome the deficiencies in the spending package that was passed just hours later. Although I fought to shape the bill toward creating and sustaining jobs, I think it could have been better. We don’t have this money to spend right now, so we’re going to go borrow the money – and that concerns people.

We have to make sure we are accountable and transparent. We need to show the taxpayers where their dollars are proposed to be spent and where they actually end up being spent. At the current time I do not believe we have reached this standard.

Constructive, not Obstructive, Solutions

Friday, February 20th, 2009

This week I had the opportunity to visit Page County — a beautiful part of Virginia, located in the northwestern tip of the 7th District. We stopped at landmarks such as the Mimslyn Inn and Luray Caverns. I was honored to meet the Graves family who have operated the Caverns as a family business for over a century and have made them the premier attraction in the Valley.

It is families and businesses and jobs such as these that I am fighting to protect in Washington. In facing this economic crisis, we have to find solutions that are constructive, not obstructive. My good friend, Delegate Todd Gilbert from the Fifteenth District put it best in saying:

“If we’re not the party of limited government, if we’re not the party of personal responsibility, if we’re not the party that respects the free market and free people to do what’s right for themselves, then we might as well hang it up.”

In Gingrich Mold, a New Voice for Solid Republican Resistance

WASHINGTON – The last time Congressional Republicans were this out of power, they turned to a college professor from Georgia, Newt Gingrich, to lead the opposition, first against President Bill Clinton in a budget battle in 1993, and then back into the majority the following year.

As Republicans confronted President Obama in another budget battle last week, their leadership included another new face: Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, who as the party’s chief vote wrangler is as responsible as anyone for the tough line the party has taken in this first legislative standoff with Mr. Obama. This battle has vaulted Mr. Cantor to the front lines of his party as it tries to recover from the losses of November. …

Americans DO Care About Wasteful Spending

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer claims “American people really don’t care” about pork projects in the recovery bill.

Principled Fiscal Conservatism

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

On Tuesday, the Wall Street Journal provided an account how “President Obama’s $825 billion spending plan…ran into a brick wall of principled fiscal conservatism” as Eric Cantor and House Republicans proudly and unanimously voted against the plan.

It went on to quote the House Republican whip in saying,

“Democrats turned the bill into a pork-fest…There was five times more money in the bill for resodding the Capital Mall than for job-creating tax cuts.”
