The Silence is Deafening.

By now, we’ve all heard about Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s disastrous trip to the Middle East. Speaker Pelosi’s determined attempt to also be Secretary of State has witnesses a high-profile diplomatic disaster the past week.

Most of the Virginians I have spoken to, my friends in Congress and even some usually democrat-friendly newspapers have declared the obvious—Speaker Pelosi was not prepared for the serious task of conducting foreign policy, she misrepresented Israel’s position, and was taken in by a Syrian terrorist.

Unfortunately, House Democrats have remained silent on the trip. They have remained silent on Pelosi’s misrepresentation of Israel’s position. They have remained silent on her assistance to Syrian propaganda efforts.

Pelosi’s decision damaged the security of Middle East and is bad for America.

It is time for House Democrats to hear from you about how unhappy you are with Speaker Pelosi’s trip to Damascus. They need to stop playing politics with America’s national security.

The Conservative Edge http://www.conservativeedge.com (the world’s first conservative online news and information service) has been covering the Pelosi trip since last week. We were the first site to focus attention on Pelosi’s monumental gaffe in delivering the wrong Israeli message to Assad. Now we are calling for a special prosecutor to investigate the trip. Comments made by Rep. Tom Lantos, about the intent of he and Speaker Pelosi’s sojourn to Damascus, show a clear violation of the Logan Act. Republicans on Capitol Hill need to have some back bone, and call for the investigation.

[...] on his blog, Cantor is conducting a campaign to “Stop Pelosi.” He writes that Congress has “remained silent on Pelosi’s misrepresentation of [...]

  3. Gary Kleppe Says:
Pelosi did nothing wrong. This is just partisan blowhardery on the part of Mr. Cantor and nothing more. Five Republican Congressmen made the same trip that she did but I don’t hear anybody bloviating about that.

  4. Chad Says:
What about the Republicans who have recently visited Syria? And by the way, didn’t Nancy Pelosi go to Syria with a Repubican?

  5. mikey Says:
I’m not certain I have all the facts. I’m pretty sure that both sides have been utterly dishonest about this entire issue. But here’s one thing I’m sure of. Anybody that takes issue with the Speaker’s trip to Syria and doesn’t even MENTION that there were also Republicans on that trip, Republicans that have defended the purpose of the trip, then I can clearly see that they are being disingenuous and strictly trying to score political points – ironically, exactly what they claim Speaker Pelosi was doing.

So, Congressman Cantor, it seems to me that you need to get consistent on your message if you want to be taken seriously. Either speak out against the Republicans for making the trip and talking with President Assad, or stop speaking out against it altogether. Because the one thing we simply do not need any more of is Partisan Hackery…

  6. MissusB Says:
Nothing surprising here-never let the facts get in the way of a good smear campaign.

  7. David Seyfried Says:
Can one say they are telling the truth when only a small portion of information is revealed? The facts that republicans accompanied Speaker Pelosi, that she had discussed the trip with Bush and didn’t get any indication that the trip would pose a problem, that Speaker Hastert deliberately went to Columbia to undermine President Clinton (and who objected?) and that Speaker Pelosi actually accomplished something are relevant details that seem to be lost to republicans. It is time to stop this smear campaign and actually do some real work for real people! If this is the best use of your time and the money you are paid then perhaps you would be better joining the Swift Boat Liars than trying to represent real American voters. In case it escaped your education, it is wrong to lie.

  8. doug Says:
I’m sorry Mr. Cantor. I was under the impression that there were Republicans on trips to Syria before and with Ms. Pelosi. But I guess you forgot that in the name of partisan politics. What is your definition of leadership?

  9. Rob Farrell Says:
WTF?! Are you for real? What about the republicans that went to Syria?

Bush’s policy of branding people we don’t like as “evil” is obviously not working. What is the problem with talking?

  10. stanley Says:
i notice a similar silence regarding the republican visit that preceded speaker pelosi’s, as well as those republicans who joined her ON her visit. why are all reports ranging from the republicans present at these syria meetings and olmert’s own spokeswoman so contrary to the arguments that you folks are putting forth? it’s baseless, partisan hackery and you should be ashamed to think that you are doing us all such a service.

  11. zendada Says:
What about the purely republican delegations?

  12. Paula Bennett Says:
It is time for you to speak the complete truth to the American public- not bellicose and vitriolic spin where you pick and choose among the facts to present your biased argument! Republicans spoke to Syria during this administration and conducted diplomatic missions during the Clinton admin. as well. That would be called the whole truth.

I find this criticism interesting, particuarly given the reaction of Arab reformers. You know what they said? They condemned Pelosi’s trip.

  18. Barry Ruddell Says:
    Dear Rep. Cantor,

The tone of your attacks on Speaker Pelosi is shrill and overwrought. For purposes of this message, I will assume your sincerity in questioning her meetings in Syria, but I strongly condemn your tone and implication. Speaker Pelosi was acting within her rights and the long-standing traditions of the House of Representatives. Your whiny, aggressive complaints about “breaking bread with terrorists” is really too much. It is offensive, it is false and it is incendiary. I, as an American citizen, am offended by your attitude, which far oversteps the reasonable, respectful tone that I would expect from a member of Congress. If anyone is out of line here, Sir, it is you and your ilk, who wish to silence all dissent from the Administration’s foolish and ultimately failing policy.

Why? What are you afraid of?

  21. Rock Says:
    Mr. Cantor,

I fully supprt your condemnation of Ms. Pelosi and her shadow foreign policy. My hope is that you go further and offer a resolution of censure in the House. Her actions are tantamount to treason, and should be punished accordingly.

  22. Eric Says:
What do the “commanders on the ground” want us to do about this?

  23. JV Says:
    One of your posters suggests:

“Please keep the pressure on, we’ve got to malign Nancy Pelosi.”

Definitions of malign on the Web:

    - evil or harmful in nature or influence; “prompted by malign motives”; “believed in witches and malign spirits”; “gave him a malign look”; “a malign lesion”

    - badmouth: speak unfavorably about; “She badmouths her husband everywhere”

    - malefic: having or exerting a malignant influence; “malevolent stars”; “a malefic force”

Is that really the republican way of doing things Mr. Cantor?

  24. Nikolay Says:
“I find this criticism interesting, particuarly given the reaction of Arab reformers. You know what they said? They condemned Pelosi’s trip.”
By Arab reformers you mean Reform Party of Syria, lead by a guy named Farid Ghadry, who moved out of Syria when he was eight and is a member of almost every neo-conservative organization in existence? His opinion sure bears a lot of weight.

There you go pulling out the Bush card again. Whenever a Democrat makes an idiot of themselves the Bush Card comes up.

If we aren’t going to negotiate with our enemies, then just who SHOULD we negotiate with??? Seems to me that negotiation is the only reasonable way to get something that you want from a party that you disagree with. How productive are negotiations going to be with, say, Canada regarding middle east peace???

  32. Roadmaster Says:
    Rep. Cantor -

Do you or do you not agree with the recommendations of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group, which specifically called for opening dialog with other parties (including Syria and Iran) in the Middle East?

  36. mighty aphrodite Says:
Thank you, Rep Cantor!! Never known for their intestinal fortitude, liberals and socialist progressives would have us abandon our ally, Israel. It’sa interesting the only religion most on the Left seem to defend is the “Religion of Peace” AKA: Islam……The recommendation of the Iraq Study group did NOT instruct Speaker Pelosi, known for her outspoken opposition to anything the Bush administration touts, to go and mangle foreign policy.

  37. don pickard Says:
    Good point Michael Moriconi!

  38. joliphant Says:
What I don’t understand about most of these liberal comments is their blatant disregard for the facts. How can you say that the Administration endorsed her trip? How is that in any way factual?

Just to get some of you up to speed; here is an AP article from before the Speaker met with Assad, the focus of the article is the opposition by the United States foreign policy establishment to the Speaker’s trip.

I’ll see with you on that one, Rock, and up the ante. Declare every Congressperson who went to Syria, and their staffs, a traitor.

And Aphrodite? Pelosi was carrying peace overtures from the Prime Minister of Israel. How does working to stop the bloodshed in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv equate with abandoning our ally?

“There you go pulling out the Bush card again. Whenever a Democrat makes an idiot of themselves the Bush Card comes up.”

Why not? It is a really easy card to play, almost always appropriate and our hands are full of them.

  41. mighty aphrodite Says:
Bart naively asks, “How does working to stop the bloodshed in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv equate with abandoning our ally?” On the surface, a decent question. But whether Nancy Pelosi was following the recommendation of the Iraq-Study group or simply pursuing the Nobel Peace Prize, IT WAS NOT HER JOB!

In the first place, the recommendations of the Iraq-Study Group are just that – recommendations. Their report is NOT a mandate. She is not a diplomat nor is she in the State Department, which reports to the EXECUTIVE BRANCH, headed by President Bush. She has made EXTREMELY negative comments about our President during a time of war and those comments have been well-reported. Thus, you should NOT be surprised that the spokespeople for Islamic Jihad and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade have been most complimentary of the Speaker. Hardly a ringing endorsement when the blood enemies of our closest ally in the Middle East praise the JUNKET….

What would you say?

  46. Ted Gillett Says:
YES!! She is NOT qualified to run our country.!! Obama obviously doesn’t want to stick to his promises and stand up to her. I lost all respect for him for not doing that. She has no clue how she is destroying our country. If she tried to run a business she would go bankrupt or be fired. Did she ever even have to manage her household finances?Does she even care or understand what this means, what a terrible position she is leading us in to? Does anyone know where she got her MBA?
