Defending the Second Amendment


Recently, House Democrats launched new attacks on your second amendment rights. They introduced legislation that would have spent your tax dollars to prohibit lawfully owned guns from law-abiding citizens in public housing communities. I am pleased to report to you that House Republicans fought back and won.

    Congressman Cantor, I applaud your defense of the Second Amendment. Somehow, there has developed a confusion regarding the rights of law-abiding citizens to “keep and bear arms.” It is good to recognize that some of our elected officials have the clarity of thought needed to understand that Second Amendment rights are all that secure our other God-given Constitutional rights. Keep up the good fight and know that your constituents will strongly support your efforts.

    Thank you. Something has to be done to stop earmarking . Each item should be discusses and voted on individually. It would take no more time from any of you since you would have the time saved from arguing and bickering over what is in and what is out. The people would also have more trust in our leaders know they couldn’t sneak their private lobbied issues in without us knowing.

    I’m tired of the liberals constantly trying to infringe on our rights granted by the 2nd amendment. It seems that every time you turn around they are forcing something down our throat or trying to take away our rights for “our own good”. They refuse to acknowledge that gun control doesn’t work and that concealed carry does. They won’t look at cold hard fact that show every in state that has implemented ccw violent crime has dropped.
    In IL they are running our gun industry out of the state with their constant attempts to regulate the sale and production of weapons. They make a big issue out of 50cal. When was the last time someone was held up with a 50?

Here in Florida we’re now trying to retain our rights to keep a firearm in our vehicle while parked on commercial property or the property of our employers as those groups are seeking to restrict us from having a firearm locked in our vehicle while parked on their property. Yet they will not take on the responsibility for protecting us while we are on their property or parking lot. FL voters need to unite in getting our voices heard in our state legislature. I’m not going to jump on the bash-the-democrats bandwagon here because the republican party has done TONS to push us closer to a fascist state, too. And for that, I am generally disgusted by most politicians of both parties.     I am glad to hear that someone in Congress is standing up for our basic rights.
    In every poll I have seen, 75% or more of the American people believe that the U.S. Constitution grants an individual right to own a gun, but some of the Democrats seem obsessed with overuling the constitution, the desire of our founding fathers, and the will of the American people by taking that right away.

I’m 42 this year, and for most of my life the Socialist/Anti-Gunners have been trying to take the teeth out of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. It amazes me that so many people in this country have been brainwashed into believing we have a Bill of Privileges, that can be toyed with at the whim of the powerful.     James – The motion in question, which did stop a pork-laden bill, was exclusively to force the Democrats to vote on the Second Amendment issue. The bill was stopped because it had both, but especially because it threatened Second Amendment rights.

    The 2nd Amendment was included in the Constitution to protect the people from a tyrannical government that might attempt to infringe on rights given to the people by their Creator. The 2nd Amendment did not give us rights by the government to bear arms… instead, our right of protection from the government was already there. The 2nd Amendment limits the rights of a government to take away our God-given right to self protection and freedom to rise up with force against an oppressive government.

    Thanks for understanding the limited role of government, and that the power of the government is contained within an educated people who actively participate in the republic.

The average law abiding person who lives in “public housing communities” needs a firearm to protect himself from all the drugs and violence that goes on in those places. If congress wants to do something to improve violence in these areas I say random drug testing for all who live there at least where I live when you here about this on the news it has something to do with a drug deal gone bad an innocent child dies because of stray bullets from drug dealers. Take firearms away from law abiding citizens and that gives bigger stronger crimanal the upperhand to do as they please. Our shotgun and rifle were our defense for not going hungry many days. When you haven’t had meat in several days a rabbit or quail taste pretty good. Thank God there are a few of you guys in Washington that still beleive in individual rights. My biggest concern is not about my guns, but when our government takes away any right of the people, it opens the door to take away more, however I cherish my right to protect myself and family against any intruder who wants to take what is mine, be it my life, my families life or my possessions.
    You may pass along this messsge to all your fellow congressmen, that I speak for thousands of men and women who refuse to vote for any anti-gun canidate.

    Thank you for taking a firm stance on the side of those of us who place a high regard for the 2nd. I’d like to see more uniformity in it’s application nationwide however. It makes no sense to have a unified country of free states if it’s legal to have certain freedoms in one but not in another. It seems the liberals don’t understand the definition of the word “infringe.” Apparently to them it means to come as close to taking away our Constitutional rights, without actually doing it, then looking for a congratulatory pat on the back for the illusion of making us all safer under their policies.     I do strongly agree with taking the issues on head first. It leaves little cover to politics and rhetoric. I appreciate your outlook on keeping the debate concentrated on the core issues as they regard not only the 2nd Amendment, but the entire Bill of Rights. It is my personal belief that the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are the very Foundation of our Nation. They are unchangeable, and inviolate. The rest is up to interpretation.

    Many thanks. Somebody should keep track of the names of all of the idiots who voted for that legislation and then around election time, everybody should be reminded of that.

    For my part, I think that there’s nothing more pathetic than somebody who arrogates to themselves self defense decisions that effects others and should be made by the people involved, when they don’t have to take the consequences of their actions. The people who voted for that bill don’t have to die, be robbed, raped, ect, if they’re wrong. And that makes any vote for such a restriction, utterly heinous.

    The faster these guys are forcably retired, the better.

    I believe that ANY type of gun control laws are unconstitutional, even the “right to carry concealed” permits (what criminal obeys that one?).
    And this is a right to carry Commonwealth (Pa. is not a “state” per-se) where we the people are allowed to carry in full view – in a holster on a hip or wherever on our person. The only restrictions for that are in government buildings, post office, banks and institutions of that sort.
    Please keep up the good work and continue to fight , not just for the 2nd amendment but for all of our rights under the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

What bill contained this threat? What was the language of the threat? When was the vote? Where can I find a record of it in the Congressional Record or House Journal? Who sponsored it originally, who were the co-sponsors, and which Representatives vote for it, which voted against it? Those are the sort of facts which make such announcements meaningful as opposed to just fund-raising hype.

    I looked up your stance on some other issues before replying, as well.

    We would appear to differ greatly on some matters. I’m nearly as strongly in favor of the principle of separation of church and state, strongly implied in the First Amendment and expressed very clearly in the writings of Thomas Jefferson and other notable Virginians, as I am of the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. I believe both principles have been widely violated and need restoration. Unfortunately, it appears that many candidates in both parties seem to want the voter to have to choose between the two.

    I wish you well in your future endeavors, but I’m afraid I’ll be reserving my wholehearted support for any candidates that I may be able to find who support our freedoms against both the idiocy of gun control and the tyranny of theocracy.

    I don’t feel at all threatened by sharing with same-sex couples the wonderful institution of marriage that I’ve enjoyed with my wife for 43 years.

    Nor do I see the religious beliefs of of some voters as a good reason to deny the hope for relief from the tortures of neuromuscular diseases and traumas that might result from from additional research into the possible benefits of stem cell use.

    I believe the government’s first duty is to protect our borders against foreign invasion. If our government ever achieves that goal and wants to do something more, the restoration of our rights that have been trampled already would have precedence over the further trampling of the freedoms of others in our society, in my view.

    If I were your constituent, you would almost certainly have my vote in the fall, however, as I can’t imagine the opposition party nominating anyone more suitable.

Make the penalties so harsh, that these criminals who are mostly non white, think before doing crime. Enact the Death Penalty and use it, rather than just keeping them in jail with their friends feeding them and housing them on my dime! Asked to trust a City and County gov’t overflowing with corruption and asked to pay higher taxes than ANY other city/county in America. If only the energy spent on taking rights away from the people of Illinois was spent on finding more efficient means of spending tax dollars.     Congressman Cantor, It is very hard for me to understand why people who claim to be intelligent do not want law abiding citizens to own or carry guns. I have been carrying concealed for many years and have never been tempted to use it on another person.
    When I see a sign on a business door I worry because law abiding persons will not be armed, who knows how many others will be armed.
    I guess it is a lack of common sense or maybe just stupidity.
    I wish all of us luck.

    Why is the first amendment so universally accepted, and defended with no arguments or stipulations while the second amenment is questioned and has more rules ,regulations and restrictions and outright bans on it. What part of the phrase the right of the people to own and bear arms not understood by the Anti gun movement (mostly Democrats) .

    I only wish we could find the root causes for armed crimes and make an amendment
    to ban it forever. Maybe only criminals use guns illegally, but what makes a criminal?
    There aren’t many rich criminals using guns, gun and crime are linked by
    poverty and lack of education. Man is not born evil with the intent to kill, he is
    only born with an instinct for self preservation. Public housing communities are
    not a usual residence for weathly people. I would much rather see
    attempts change the status of people who live in public housing, so that
    they wouldn’t need a gun.
