In IL they are running our gun industry out of the state with their constant attempts to regulate the sale and production of weapons. They make a big issue out of 50cal. When was the last time someone was held up with a 50?

Here in Florida we’re now trying to retain our rights to keep a firearm in our vehicle while parked on commercial property or the property of our employers as those groups are seeking to restrict us from having a firearm locked in our vehicle while parked on their property. In every poll I have seen, 75% or more of the American people believe that the U.S. Constitution grants an individual right to own a gun, but some of the Democrats seem obsessed with overuling the constitution, the desire of our founding fathers, and the will of the American people by taking that right away.

The 2nd Amendment did not give us rights by the government to bear arms… instead, our right of protection from the government was already there. The 2nd Amendment limits the rights of a government to take away our God-given right to self protection and freedom to rise up with force against an oppressive government.
Thanks for understanding the limited role of government, and that the power of the government is contained within an educated people who actively participate in the republic.

Our shotgun and rifle were our defense for not going hungry many days. When you haven’t had meat in several days a rabbit or quail taste pretty good. Thank God there are a few of you guys in Washington that still beleive in individual rights. My biggest concern is not about my guns, but when our government takes away any right of the people, it opens the door to take away more, however I cherish my right to protect myself and family against any intruder who wants to take what is mine, be it my life, my families life or my possessions.
You may pass along this messsge to all your fellow congressmen, that I speak for thousands of men and women who refuse to vote for any anti-gun canidate.

It makes no sense to have a unified country of free states if it’s legal to have certain freedoms in one but not in another. I do strongly agree with taking the issues on head first. It leaves little cover to politics and rhetoric. I appreciate your outlook on keeping the debate concentrated on the core issues as they regard not only the 2nd Amendment, but the entire Bill of Rights. It is my personal belief that the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights are the very Foundation of our Nation. They are unchangeable, and inviolate. The rest is up to interpretation.

For my part, I think that there’s nothing more pathetic than somebody who arrogates to themselves self defense decisions that effects others and should be made by the people involved, when they don’t have to take the consequences of their actions. The people who voted for that bill don’t have to die, be robbed, raped, ect, if they’re wrong. And that makes any vote for such a restriction, utterly heinous.
The faster these guys are forcably retired, the better.

This is already in writing and going to be voted on in Illinois, and PA.
Americans will not stand for such onerous registration attempts……………………….

Gun owners who understand the Const & BOR’s, are not content to talk about this anymore.
A Jeffersonian solution may be needed. Bottom line, we are sick of them, and had all we will stand.

I believe that ANY type of gun control laws are unconstitutional, even the “right to carry concealed” permits (what criminal obeys that one?).
And this is a right to carry Commonwealth (Pa. is not a “state” per-se) where we the people are allowed to carry in full view – in a holster on a hip or wherever on our person. The only restrictions for that are in government buildings, post office, banks and institutions of that sort.
Please keep up the good work and continue to fight , not just for the 2nd amendment but for all of our rights under the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

We have no other rights if we cannot defend ourselves. I read somewhere that an unarmed man (woman) is a subject while an armed man (woman) is a citizen. While at home with my family, i have that same strong obligation to defend them from threats, foreign and domestic, by any mean necessary. I have bought all my firearms according to the law. There are unsavory characters out in the neighborhoods that have purchased firearms unlawfully, how you may ask, form second hand theft. Someone steals it and sells it out in the streets. Now it is hard to prevent that from happening but what are we supposed to do when one of those unsavory characters come into my home and threaten my wife and daughter. March 12th, 2008 at 10:12 am I support second amendment rights for people to lawfully own firearms. Law abiding citizens who own firearms are not a danger to the public. Criminals are the danger. Further regulating the law abiding citizen is not the answer, regulating the criminals is the answer. I would NEVER want my tax contribution to be spent on anything that further erodes second amendment rights for law abiding citizens.
Why is it that special interest groups whose numbers are very small get plenty of attention while the more than 60 million legal owners of firearms (some 20% of the US population) get our voices squelched?
Thank you for your support of the second amendment guaranteeing our right to keep and bear arms that pre-existed the constitution. The second amendment is a guarantee by the government that it will not infringe that pre-existing right. So much for government guarantees. If only it was as good as LL Bean’s guarantee.

March 12th, 2008 at 10:32 am While it’s good anytime such provisions are stopped, this announcement reminds me very much of the sort of “beg” letters I used to get from the NRA/ILA–lots of fear-raising threat and very little verifiable information. What bill contained this threat? What was the language of the threat? When was the vote? Where can I find a record of it in the Congressional Record or House Journal? Who sponsored it originally, who were the co-sponsors, and which Representatives vote for it, which voted against it? Those are the sort of facts which make such announcements meaningful as opposed to just fund-raising hype.

Thank you for your support of our second amendment rights. I couldn’t agree more on their importance.
I looked up your stance on some other issues before replying, as well.
We would appear to differ greatly on some matters. I’m nearly as strongly in favor of the principle of separation of church and state, strongly implied in the First Amendment and expressed very clearly in the writings of Thomas Jefferson and other notable Virginians, as I am of the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. I believe both principles have been widely violated and need restoration. Unfortunately, it appears that many candidates in both parties seem to want the voter to have to choose between the two.
I wish you well in your future endeavors, but I’m afraid I’ll be reserving my wholehearted support for any candidates that I may be able to find who support our freedoms against both the idiocy of gun control and the tyranny of theocracy.
I don’t feel at all threatened by sharing with same-sex couples the wonderful institution of marriage that I’ve enjoyed with my wife for 43 years.
Nor do I see the religious beliefs of of some voters as a good reason to deny the hope for relief from the tortures of neuromuscular diseases and traumas that might result from from additional research into the possible benefits of stem cell use.
I believe the government’s first duty is to protect our borders against foreign invasion. If our government ever achieves that goal and wants to do something more, the restoration of our rights that have been trampled already would have precedence over the further trampling of the freedoms of others in our society, in my view.
If I were your constituent, you would almost certainly have my vote in the fall, however, as I can’t imagine the opposition party nominating anyone more suitable.

This type of arrogant elitism has led to some of the most horrendous, repressive regimes to come to power in other lands.
We do not need this type of thinking within the governmental processes in this country. The Founding Fathers got it right the first time around. There is no need to second guess the ideals that made this country the greatest and most admired nation on the face of the earth. Even those who hate us, envy us for what has been accomplished by a country that was birthed to believe in the common sense of the majority of the common people.
There is no reason to tinker with the concepts that made us what we are.

They need to be investigated for crimes they may have perpetrated, she is pure evil. Has No One else realized that at the current state of affairs we are in globally, that most Arabic Nations do not view women as equals? Nor do the Asians. Does she think that she will be taken as seriously as a male President, when dealing with Korea, China and the Arab & Palestine states? As an NRA member, veteran of 4 combat tours; Former Army Special Operations Officer and a firm believer and supporter of our second amendment rights “To keep and Bear Arms …” For the lawful protection of myself, my family and any innocent person I come across who is in need of defense from brazen armed criminals, I feel it is my God given right, Protected by our forebears who fought for Independence of this Country, for me to legally bear arms for self defense and to lawfully aid in the defense of our Nation should, God forbid we are attacked again by terrorists or invaded. . We must fight those politicians, who have a skewed view of “Gun Control”. Rather than remove the legal guns and ammunition from Americans who have passed the legally imposed laws to Carry Concealed Weapons and to purchase weapons, they should find better ways to uphold current laws and enact new stronger punishments on the miscreants who do crimes of violence with any sort of weapon or harmful intent. I and my armed neighbors in Missouri are not about to go and rob the local 7-11 or car-jack someone to joyride or steal their car. However our Police cannot protect us in time of confrontation. They are a reaction force, someone my wife will call after shots have been fired or we have been robbed. Tell the Democrats and politicians who wish to infringe on our lawful 2nd amendment rights afforded us by the law of our land, the U.S. Constitution, that we do not afford the luxury of having personal protective details with us as they do. Why not take away their’s and the President’s Secret Service details rights to carry firearms and see how they’d feel then? Surely at least to myself, my life and my families’ lives are just as precious as theirs are. The way to stop crime is to stop criminals, not good law abiding citizens who pay the taxes that make this governments payroll. Make the penalties so harsh, that these criminals who are mostly non white, think before doing crime. Enact the Death Penalty and use it, rather than just keeping them in jail with their friends feeding them and housing them on my dime! Preparing them to leave prison with new gained knowledge to commit more crime!

In response to the second amendment, any attack against the lawful gun owner is unjust and unfair. I live in Illinois and have some of the strictest gun contral laws in the nation to deal with. There are so many gun control laws now on the books that are not or can not be inforced. Just the addition of more gun control bills is a waste of tax payers money, a slap in the face of American citizens, and more importantly goes against the second amendment of the United States Constitution.

Shame the liberal socialists in Congress don’t understand what the Bill of Rights actually means. If they would take the 2A, what would follow? Our right to assemble? Our right to free speech? Religion? The 2A *IS* #2 in the Bill of Rights for a reason.
I also live in a state, CA, that is being re-shaped and mis-managed by socialist ideals. The blatant disregard for and ongoing infringement of our basic rights as Americans has gone on long enough.
Until states like CA, NY, IL, NJ, et al, begin legislating like they are members of a UNITED States of America, I urge you to remind the men and women of Congress, again and again and again, of our 14A rights and what that specific amendment grants the citizens of our country:

I would like to see a BILL which re-affirms the “Right of the People to Keep and Bear Arms.” Which would end this fight once and for all.
We all know Laws are obeyed by law abiding citizens, not by criminals. Therefore, any law intended to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals is doomed to fail.
How about, you make public all the Congressional Studies on the Second Amendment? I understand all these Studies state “The Right of the People to keep and Bear Arms” means the citizen, not the militia (Military).

From my own personal experience as a full time veteran law enforcement officer I can personally say their is no better protection in your home than having a firearm to protect yourself and your loved ones from an intruder/criminal should one break into your home. The LA riots and Katrina alone are clear examples of what can happen when law enforcement is out numbered and uncapable of defending the people in their homes. Not a week passes that I hear of a new resolution being prepared from socialist representative out of Chicago who cannot understand why a “regular” person would want or need to own a gun. It started in Chicago, then expanded to Cook county, now they are trying to ban weapons statewide. All the while criminals from Chicago need only to travel a few miles to Indiana to procure weapons that any law abiding Chicagoan cannot. We are protected by the Chicago PD, mostly made up of great men and women that by their own admission are outnumberd and out gunned. Asked to trust a City and County gov’t overflowing with corruption and asked to pay higher taxes than ANY other city/county in America. If only the energy spent on taking rights away from the people of Illinois was spent on finding more efficient means of spending tax dollars. The constitution was written to guarantee freedom not oppress it. Thank you for fighting the good fight.

!. When ever gun laws are passed disarming the citizens, the crime rate sky-rockets.
2. The crime rates and shootings are highest in gun-free zones.
3. Surveyed convicted criminals readily admit to selecting victims in areas where they least
expect to be confronted with a firearm.
4. A disarmed citizenry allows the criminal to carry out his criminal behavior woith impunity.
5. Every form of totalitarian government started out by outlawing guns and disarming the people.

March 14th, 2008 at 3:11 pm Congressman Cantor, It is very hard for me to understand why people who claim to be intelligent do not want law abiding citizens to own or carry guns. I have been carrying concealed for many years and have never been tempted to use it on another person.
When I see a sign on a business door I worry because law abiding persons will not be armed, who knows how many others will be armed.
I guess it is a lack of common sense or maybe just stupidity.
I wish all of us luck.

March 16th, 2008 at 2:24 pm Why is the first amendment so universally accepted, and defended with no arguments or stipulations while the second amenment is questioned and has more rules ,regulations and restrictions and outright bans on it. What part of the phrase the right of the people to own and bear arms not understood by the Anti gun movement (mostly Democrats) .

to ban it forever. Maybe only criminals use guns illegally, but what makes a criminal?
There aren’t many rich criminals using guns, gun and crime are linked by
poverty and lack of education. Man is not born evil with the intent to kill, he is
only born with an instinct for self preservation. Public housing communities are
not a usual residence for weathly people. I would much rather see
attempts change the status of people who live in public housing, so that
they wouldn’t need a gun.
